Zidane vs Deportivo La Coruna on 5th Jan 2002 #iconic

Can't believe its been exactly 21 years since Zinedine Zidane scored this brilliant goal in Real Madrid's 3-1 victory over Deportivo de La Coruña.

Deportivo were an incredible side back in 2002. They finished 2nd in the league to Valencia. That team was played one of the most incredible matches in Champions League history against AC Milan. Spoiler alert: They scored 4 goals in the second league to beat AC Milan. The first true #remontada ?

Enough about Milan and back to Real Madrid now.

Real Madrid had just begun their Galacticos era and they were in the process of building a cohesive team. Playing against tough sides like Deportivo was their Achilles heel. The game was hard fought, and it required a moment of pure genius from Zidane to seal the deal. 3-1 to Madrid.

The first touch, slick back to the right and back to the left to get himself an inch of space before rifling it home with his left foot, was pure Zidane magic at its best.

And this wouldn't be the last time that season Zidane would pull out an absolute kangaroo out of his hat. Just watch the winning goal of the 2002 Champions League final to get an idea of what I'm talking about ;)

“Zinedine Zidane. What he could do with a football is a dream for most of us.”
